SEMC: Yemen on the brink of famine

The Studies and Economic Media Center (SEMC) has warned that Yemen is teetering on the verge of famine that threatens to sweep the impoverished country due to the deterioration of the economic and humanitarian situation.

The warning was ensconced in a monthly report on Yemen's July economic indicators , which is part of Rasad (monitoring) initiative undertaken by the center.

The report revealed that famine had swept across several districts of Hodeida, namely Khukha and Tuhaita, and some areas in the western province of Hajja, especially after social care salaries have cut off to the poor in these areas for over one and a half years.

The report  covers the economic and humanitarian situation in the provinces of Sana'a, Hodeida, Taiz, Aden, Mareb and Hadramout, with a focus  on public services,  including water, electricity, oil products,  and health essentials. It also touched upon foreign exchange rates against the local currency, the Riyal, as well as the trade activities at Yemeni city ports.

SEMC is a NGO that works towards a successful and transparent economy by spreading awareness of economic issues, boosting transparency and citizens’ involvement in decision-making. It seeks to achieve the economic empowerment of men and women, reduction of conflicts, and creation of professional media.
